As the administrative centre of the Pays de la Loire region, Nantes has long been a popular location for visitors looking for a bit of western French charm.  Situated close to the Atlantic coast on the banks of the Loire River, Nantes has many beautiful buildings to attract sight-seers as well as a reputation for having some of the best seafood cuisine in the country.  The Nantes Cathedral (the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul) is a stunning example of Gothic Roman-Catholic architecture, whilst the Chateau des ducs de Bretagne (Castle of the Dukes of Brittany) remained the centre of the entire region of Brittany for hundreds of years.  Nantes has many museums and musical venues (including Theatre Graslin and the Musee Jules Verne) as well as a quaint nineteenth century shopping mall, Passage Pommeraye.  Within easy driving distance of Saint Nazaire (approximately sixty kilometres away off the E60 motorway) and Angers (eighty kilometres to the north-east on the A11), Nantes is also ideally located for exploring the surrounding farms and vineyards.

The Nantes Atlantique Airport (sometimes known as Aeroport Chateau Bougon) is located some seven kilometres outside of the town just off of the E03/N844.  The single runway airport is visited by several airlines, including Easy Jet (from London and Geneva), Ryan Air (from Bournemouth, East Midlands, Dublin, Liverpool, Shannon and London), Aer Arann (from Manchester, Cork and Cardiff), and Air France from regional centres around the country.  The airport has a special car-hire building situated outside of the terminal, and includes offices for Avis, National Citer, Hertz, Sixt and Europcar.
